The guys at TheMidnightcoders did a great investment building such handy useful piece of software. I guess others say that is not, because of AMFPHP is good or something related to it. But the fact is Weborb has key features that put my lovely amfphp down in several aspect.
This review intend to not promote weborb and say bad words about amfphp open-source project. I intend to express my experience such related to the weborb for php, so I will make any comparatives sentences with them.
Download/ registration
At the midnightcoders site, is easy to register and get a free copy of weborb for PHP.
Documentation
Free or payed software to me documentation is such tremendous essential like software features. The Weborb for PHP has respect that to developers and customers, they did great documentation notes inside the code, samples and tips and tricks.
The only problem two problems I found in the documentation is because doesn’t detail how to create RemoteObjects from MXML syntax and because the primarily doesn’t point to developers how to properly create a new flex project with right -service parameter to compiler.
The entire documentation under console admin isn’t complete yet, but you can get a start guide who also you wil get working quickly with no doubt.
They also have an FAQ about integration an general questions on how to deploy.
Examples and source explore.
Has a good quantity of samples and all expressed examples shows how to use the remoteObject. the only missing example that everyone ask is how to connect with DataBase that for sure I believe that the guys at MNC, will do for next version.
Translations and conversions
AMF0/AMF3 it’s pretty fast even with 20k rows per request, like 2.7ms. Witch has great scability. VO from PHP and AS3.0 do great as they aims.
Support for PHP and Compatibility
The product is easy to install just unzip the product into the httdocs of your php server and I’ve tested with PHP 5.1.1 and PHP 5.2.3 and the compatibility is great. Doing with any kind of problem.
Console and administration

There’s many key things on the console, like:
Explore the PHP class methods, code format for as3/as2/FMS/ajax client and Carnigorm mvc pattern .

Weborb is growing fast and I believe that many php developers with no confident with Flex, will for sure using this product to deploy their applications using it.
One thing that maybe helpful it’s because weborb for PHP is free, and php developers are usually with this kind of behavior, free to them mean that they can build stuffs without spending more money. I don’t know about the business acts from themidnightcoders about this software. But they got a step ahead into it, giving for free of charge the Weborb for PHP. You can use commercially under Mozilla License (MPL).
The next version of weborb as I saw in the Mark Piller the co-founder of MDC, said that publish/subscribe features that is only included in their java version and blazeds, lcds and graniteds, will for first time into php version. I don’t know if will be free, but for somehow I believe they will give for free.
If you are a curious developer that try and search into better deployment into your day-by-day, I suggest you to take a look at weborb for php, it impressed me a lo.t

Igor, thanks for the review! To clarify, all future versions of WebORB for PHP will remain free of charge, as a result all the features we will be adding will not cost anything from the licensing perspective. We plan to make money off of paid support plans, training and consulting.
That`s really great news to the community and for sure I was thought on that.

Management Console is unable to communicate with WebORB. Make sure the product is properly configured. Remoting requests fail with the following error – Send failed
Same here, I’ve tried AMFPHP too, from the Complexity in Programming AMFPHP is More Easy, but in WebOrb i can built Apps with huge data with no problem at all, especially Sincronize between Client and Server side, its Amazing, thanks for themidnightcoder.
Hi Igor,
Thanks for the great review! I did want to provide an update because we are going to be restructuring our WebORB offering effective November 1st. What this means is that the current free version will be relabeled as the WebORB for PHP Community Edition and that will always be free. Then we will introduce a new Enterprise Edition, which will have advanced features and benefits and that will have a fee. We’re also introducing a suite of testing tools and training programs in November. Check our site next month as we’ve got lots of things happening here at the Midnight Coders.
Cheers,
Kathleen
Thanks guys for this review. But one of the most important things we do as programmers dealing with tons of data is communicate with the back end. And since we are in the subject of FREE. I would like to add that we would love to have an example of connecting to a MySQL database. This would be invaluable to me and I am hoping others.
Thanks again, great work,
Agent RR007
Agent – I’m currently evaluating WebORB for a project, there are some great MySQL examples in the download that work well, really impressive stuff.
