Flex 2 Charts without Flex Charts framework

Filed under 3.0, Actionscript, Flash CS3, Flex, Flex Beyound basic, Flex Components, General announcements, Labs, Open Source Stuffs

This weekend I was building an uncle Application for his company that sell Gas, and the only problem I’ve saw it was the license for charts distribution on his application, I have license for build Flex Charts but I’d like to figure out another way to create an independent application with charts without to use the Charts built-in in Flex Builder.

So,I remember at the same time,That Adobe Flex Team released the Flex Component Kit for Flash CS3 wich gives to you the whole possibility that you can’t image, That’s exactly the point, I’ve tested massivly for the application and the results worked smoothly with me.

I know the Flex Charts are so awsome and has many features ever saw before but I really would like to face off something never explored before, the results is bellow, click on the image to see in action.

Free Flex Charts

Some problems that I found in the main time while I was testing I’ve commented into the code and now you can make changes on your own. Basically it’s a proof of concept, wich means that I or you have many other problems to solve and makes work much more perfectly.

I’ve used Tweener for effects because it’s lightwave wich not means that Flex effect isn’t it’s because I’ve just would like to explore other piece of software from the community.

The entire Flex Component Kit as UIMovieClip Class works perfectly and I can integrate at this moment of release before the Flex 3 Builder is out many 90% features the classes give to me.

It was the first time I’ve used the Flex Component kit for Flash CS3 in a commercial Application. The title of this post is because you can create your own .fla file with your Flash CS3 installed version and Flex 2 Builder, so you can create your charts, But pay attention, the UIMovieClip class that makes the hole integration isn’t open-source.
The entire source code is available for your use at your own risk, suggestions please comment or mail me.

    That’s a really cool idea
The link to the sample application appears to be broken though

    Keep up the good work

It’s a very nice article. Although, would be glad if someone could make the same in FLCS3. Now that flex it’s more intend to RIA, but some times in flash for some full sites we need to insert dynamic charts. In one of projects, i wanna to include some, but time was running, and i’ve prefered just to include tables with dynamic data.

Once again, very nice work Igor. Hope to read new articles from you.

    Idée simpa !

Mais la finalisation graphique n’est quand même pas au rende-vous.
Cependant, la qualitée de la petite animation des barres et des colonnes est simpa !

    Bravo :)

    Igor,

I just downloaded these files and it seems like there is something missing from the ZIP — I get errors at the lines referencing local:freeBarChart, which I assume is what is loading the bar chart. Needless to say, I don’t have a mxml file, as file or swf/swc file in any of the folders that are in your ZIP.

Give me a shout when you can leif[dot]wells[at]augatlanta[dot]org

    Hi Igor:

Getting the same thing as Leif. Have an error that says:

    unable to open ‘C:\Documents and Settings\asds\Meus documentos\chartBlue.swc

I can’t find this directory in the code, so I am not sure where the error is coming from.

Also, seems this swc.chart used in the application is not included in the zip file and the problem is a missing mxml component for freebarchart.

If that is that case, can you send the component to me or let me know how to fix this.

    Thanks.

    Mark
